I am a creative researcher passionate about empowering artists to produce authentic work. Growing up, I often wrote poetry while my father painted. After completing a Bachelor of Psychology, my creative interests lay dormant until the birth of my children reawakened my interest in humanity’s inherent creativity. I began working at 19 Karen Contemporary Artspace, using my research skills to assess artwork and artists. It was then that I reconnected with poetry, using it to engage intuitively and seamlessly with the artwork as if the imagery was a portal into the artists mind itself. In 2021, I completed a Master of Arts Research, designing a method for writing using “ekphrasis,” where imagery is interpreted to craft writing. My unique method involves “somatic storytelling” to unlock emotional subconscious memories, enhancing the authenticity and potential of creative voices. The characteristics of ekphrasis are also foundational to art curation and presentation. My memoir, “Wild Woman Walking,” is the creative outcome of my academic research and is the poetic telling of this artistic and emotive reawakening.
“I think perhaps you existed long before I was born. You were lodged in my grandmother’s bones. She carried you here on a boat from Germany with grandad and my two-year-old mother. I have a photo of mum and my uncle at the beach after they had settled into Brisbane. They are both wearing woollen jumpers while they swim. Grandad didn’t want them to catch a cold. He died just after I was born, but I met him through my grandmother’s anxiety and lack of spirit, which she hid beneath an immaculate appearance and the odd drink of whiskey.”
A wild woman walks without taking a single step. She unravels the parts of herself that have kept her safe and protected, to find the parts that will set her free. To be wild is not to be unruly. A wild woman doesn’t fight. She doesn’t flee. She surrenders to what is alive within her – as it is right now – and uses that wisdom to disentangle her stories and reclaim herself.
